The NECA Convention & Trade Show was held October 7 - 10, 2017 in Seattle, Washington.  The Chicago & Cook County Chapter was well represented.  A highlight of the Convention was Steve Diamond, Malko Communication Services, LLC receiving the "McGraw" Award from National NECA during the Closing General Session.  We thank Steve, as he was recognized for his efforts to benefit the industry.

During the Convention addresses, the NECA initiatives led by President, David Hardt, Hardt Electric, Inc. focusing on the value of membership, increased safety on the jobsite, bettering communication with the IBEW, among many other areas were highlighted.  NECA President Hardt made his final addresses to the Governor's Meeting and to the attendees at the Opening General Session, as his term culminates by year's end.

Highlights from the Governor’s Meeting included the following: Lonnie Stephenson, IBEW International President gave a brief presentation and commented on employment concerns and the importance of confronting industry challenges, together.  He reported that there is approximately 30% market share throughout the country and an impending labor shortage, as there is an anticipated 56,000 retirees in the next five years.  In regard to increasing the number of union electricians and union contractors, the current overall apprentice numbers need to be adjusted and IBEW Membership Development efforts are to be increased. Winning new work, continually, by utilizing more NECA contractors, must be a priority.  Both union and management needs to be strong and well-represented.  On-going communication is imperative.

David Hardt discussed numerous issues during his final addresses which included the following:  He is encouraged by the partnership of NECA and the IBEW.  NECA is re-invigorating the ELECTRI Council.  The NECA Vision 2020 effort is intended to guide NECA through 2020 and beyond. The NECA Vision 2020 Task Force is to complete research by early next year.  Topics of research included:  technology and how it impacts performance, leveling the playing field with union and non-union contractors; Pre-fabrication / Pre-construction, economic changes, relationships with manufacturers, suppliers; dealing with significant changes as disruptive change is inevitable. NECA is proactive and adapts to change.  He re-affirmed that NECA remains a trusted work resource for union contractors and NECA has value for all its membership. NECA President Hardt emphasized the importance of continuing the positive efforts / programs that NECA has initiated so union contractors can better understand the challenges, ahead. He thanked all for the support of his term and the continuing NECA initiatives.

During the Chicago & Cook County Chapter dinner held on October 9th, David Hardt was presented with the "Bow Tie" Award on behalf of the members of the Chapter.   ECA President, Eric Nixon, Maron Electric Company presented David with the award. The "Bow Tie" Award had the inscription, "On behalf of the Electrical Contractors' Association of City of Chicago, the "Bow Tie" Award is given to Mr. David A. Hardt in recognition of his tireless efforts serving as NECA President 2015 - 2017."  President Nixon also offered these words, "His leadership has secured a path for the future of union electrical construction across the nation.  He has tied together the positive attributes of union and management working together through the example of selfless giving, prudent stewardship and a common-sense approach to facing industry challenges."

We thank David for his years of dedicated service that not only enhanced the local union electrical industry through his involvement with the ECA, but on a much grander national scale through NECA.
