NECA Student Chapter members were involved with two IPRO student projects associated with ECA at the Fall IIT Interprofessional Projects Program (IPRO) Day on November 18, 2016. Both IPROs won.  The “Energy Efficiency Strategies for Chicago Buildings” (IPRO 213) initially supported by ECA for the NECA Green Energy Challenge in 2016, won the best project for the Energy and Sustainability Innovation Track 10. This IPRO centered on the NECA student chapter students conducting an energy audit of Farr Hall and proposed several viable energy improvements. Dr. Dan Tomal, was the Advisor. The team hopes to compete in the 2017 NECA Green Energy Challenge.

The second winner was IPRO 214 titled, “Electro-Mechanical Underground Utility Vault Design” which won the Dean’s Choice award for the School of Applied Technology (SAT). This IPRO focused on developing a monitoring system for detecting electric vault conditions such as CO2, gas, temperature and humidity, pH, and water level. This IPRO was originally sponsored by ECA member, Ken Klausner of Contractors Power & Light Company.  Dr. Dan Tomal, INTM was also Advisor for this IPRO. The development of this project, using processors, sensors, and Arduino, was done in the new School of Applied Technology Smart Tech Lab which was funded by ECA and several ECA members.  Congratulations to the NECA IIT Student Chapter members, as well as all the students that were able to participate with these projects.
